CIP and Blueyou Launch Strategic Partnership to Advance Blue Carbon and Sustainable Coastal Development in Indonesia
Scottsville, Virginia, USA and Zürich, Switzerland; 08/19/2026
Climate Investment Partners (CIP), a global developer of high-integrity nature-based climate solutions, and Blueyou, an international leader in sustainable seafood and regenerative aquaculture, today announced the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop integrated mangrove restoration and sustainable coastal livelihood projects in Indonesia.
The partnership brings together two organizations with complementary expertise and a shared vision: restoring critical coastal ecosystems while creating resilient local economies through innovative, market-based solutions. Both CIP and Blueyou are Certified B Corporations, reflecting a shared commitment to measurable environmental and social accountability.
Together, the organizations will develop projects that integrate blue carbon, mangrove restoration and community-based Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture (IMA) into scalable models capable of delivering measurable climate, biodiversity, and socioeconomic benefits, aligned with the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCBS).
About the Partnership
Indonesia contains approximately one-fifth of the world’s mangrove forests, making it one of the most important countries for global blue carbon restoration, conservation, and coastal resilience. By combining carbon finance with regenerative aquaculture, the partnership seeks to demonstrate how environmental restoration and sustainable economic development can reinforce one another.
This work builds directly on CIP’s existing mangrove portfolio in the country. Since 2023, CIP has been developing the Pesisir Biru Nusantara: An Indonesian Mangrove Restoration Project, a large-scale afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR) and restoration of wetland ecosystems (RWE) initiative spanning coastlines and river deltas throughout the country, developed under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and CCBS. The project aims to restore 10,000 hectares of degraded mangroves, generate approximately 140,000 annual carbon credits, and benefit more than 2,000 members of local communities — while restoring habitat for endangered species such as the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) and the long-tailed grey macaque (Macaca fascicularis). “Our mission has always been to empower local communities through innovative nature-based solutions,” said James Eaton, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Climate Investment Partners. “This collaboration with Blueyou brings together world-class expertise in carbon markets, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable aquaculture to create projects that generate lasting value for communities while helping address climate change.”
Blueyou has spent more than two decades pioneering sustainable seafood systems and working alongside coastal communities throughout Southeast Asia to build environmentally responsible and economically viable fisheries and aquaculture programs and corresponding supply chains. The company’s regenerative approach recognizes that healthy oceans and prosperous coastal communities are inseparable.
“Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture offers a unique opportunity to restore mangroves while at the same time improving livelihoods of local communities through higher aquaculture productivity” said Jonas Walker, General Manager Blueyou Impact and Head of Aquaculture. “An estimated 1 million hectares of coastal areas located in former mangrove forests are suitable for integrated mangrove aquaculture and could be transformed from their current degraded and unproductive state into thriving blue food forests. Carbon finance could play a catalytic role in scaling these solutions, and through our partnership with Climate Investment Partners, we are developing the frameworks to start tapping into this potential. “
Impact and Broader Significance
The collaboration reflects both organizations’ commitment to ensuring that conservation delivers tangible benefits to the people who depend on healthy coastal ecosystems. By aligning carbon finance with sustainable food production and community development, the partnership aims to create a replicable model for nature-based solutions throughout Southeast Asia and beyond.
Looking Ahead
The organizations expect to begin advancing priority opportunities in Indonesia immediately, working closely with local communities, government partners, technical experts, and impact investors to bring integrated blue carbon projects from concept to implementation.
