PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS
Biodiversity
The Amazon is home to a vast diversity of species, each facing unique threats due to habitat loss and deforestation. Notable wildlife includes the howler monkey (Alouatta spp.), freshwater dolphins like the Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis), the vibrant scarlet macaw (Ara macao), and the elusive jaguar (Panthera onca). The ecosystem also protects plant species such as the vulnerable Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) and big leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). However, these species are under constant pressure from expanding cattle ranches, agriculture, and local subsistence farming.
Community benefits
The Envira Amazonia Project – A Tropical Forest Conservation Project will:
- Establish alternative sources of income and employment opportunities;
- Provide agricultural extension training;
- Provide social projects and programs such as commercializing the collection, transport, and sale of rubber and medicinal plants;
- Increase access to local health clinics and pharmacies;
- Donate solar photovoltaic systems to local communities; and
- Grant official land titles to strengthen local land tenure rights.
