Biodiversity
The project will create valuable wildlife habitat corridors, reintroduce native pine forest, and restore dry tropical forest, which currently covers less than 2% of its original extent in Central America.
The project may also plant and propagate the following IUCN Red List Threatened trees:
- Dalbergia retusa (critically endangered);
- Ateleia herbert-smithii (endangered);
- Pinus tecunumanii (vulnerable); and
- Cedrela odorata (vulnerable).
COMMUNITY BENEFITS
The Native Ecosystem Restoration in Nicaragua Project will:
- Promote sustainable and gender-equitable income generation for local farmers through employment in land management, nursery maintenance, and tree planting; and
- Reforest the area, providing nearby communities with ecosystem services like restored watersheds, improved soils, and enhanced habitat.
