The Hongera Reforestation Project in Kenya Achieves International Carbon Certification

This image shows a picturesque savanna landscape with a group of antelopes grazing in the golden, dry grass. In the background, there are rolling hills and a dense forested area, leading up to a dramatic, rugged mountain range under a clear blue sky. The scene captures the beauty of the wild, open plains and the harmony of wildlife within their natural habitat.

Climate Investment Partners is excited to announce that The Hongera Reforestation Project in Kenya has officially received the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) validation by Verra. This significant milestone marks our ongoing commitment to restoring ecosystems and building sustainable development across Kenya’s Mt Kenya and Aberdares regions. Through the partnership with DGB Group, the Hongera Reforestation Project brings impactful carbon sequestration and community empowerment to areas impacted by historical deforestation.

What This Means for the Hongera Project

The Hongera Reforestation Project was launched in 2022 to revitalize large areas of degraded land. With this validation, Hongera can now scale in order to produce verified carbon credits, which measure the amount of carbon dioxide that the project’s trees will absorb from the atmosphere. This helps tackle climate change by reducing greenhouse gasses.

Key Facts About Hongera Reforestation Project

  • 10.7 million trees to be planted across 27,000 hectares of previously degraded land.
  • 285,000 tonnes of CO₂ captured each year, supporting a healthier global environment.
  • Over 10,000 local community members are provided with jobs, training, and resources to build sustainable livelihoods.

Community Benefits and Environmental Impact

The Hongera Reforestation Project’s primary goal is to address climate change and boost biodiversity. By reintroducing native trees, the project creates essential habitats for wildlife, improves the soils, and increases water resources in the region. Partnering closely with local communities also means that thousands of people receive job training and resources to plant and care for the new trees, ensuring the land is protected in the long term.

Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Hongera Reforestation Project directly advances several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1 (No Poverty) by providing sustainable employment for over 10,000 residents, and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through training in forestry and conservation. The project also supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by strengthening regional infrastructure, such as water systems, along with SDG 13 (Climate Action) with significant CO₂ capture, and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by restoring habitats and boosting biodiversity. These impacts contribute to both local resilience and global environmental health.

What’s Next for Hongera?

With VCS validation, the Hongera Reforestation Project can now generate verified carbon credits, which will support ongoing reforestation efforts and provide financial stability for further expansion. The Hongera Reforestation Project expects to issue its first carbon credits in 2027, marking an important step in Kenya’s reforestation journey.
