Biodiversity
Kenya is home to a great variety of life, with over 35,000 species of flora and fauna. The country’s diverse ecosystems range from mountains, to tropical forests, and savannahs. Furthermore, around 2.5% of the country’s total area is covered by inland lake and wetland habitats.
Kenyan forests, in particular, are especially rich in plant and animal life and most of the country’s endemic species live in forest habitats.
Community benefits
The Hongera Reforestation Project will:
- Increase farmer incomes by offering sustainable job opportunities and providing well-paying jobs;
- Provide essential training in nursery management, workers’ rights, workplace safety, and educate on conservation and reforestation; and
- Enhance community infrastructure, such as water systems, and support the transition to different agricultural crops, aiming to reduce inequalities.
