Biodiversity
The project area is adjacent to Sebangau National Park, home to the world’s largest population of Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus; a critically endangered species per the IUCN Red List). Project activities will restore and protect the habitat of the Bornean orangutan, as well as other endemic IUCN endangered species including the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), Bornean white-bearded gibbon (Hylobates albibarbis) and the Bornean clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi borneensis).
Community benefits
The Central Kalimantan Peatland Rewetting Project will :
- Provide employment in tree nurseries, project monitoring, forest patrols, and dam construction and maintenance;
- Lead to opportunities in education, training, and technical knowledge sharing;
- Improve access to clean water;
- Minimize effects of peatland fires, leading to improved air quality; and
- Offer opportunities for diversified income through sustainable agroforestry, honey, rattan, and medicinal plant collection.
